The human body : an engine who need some (bio)fuel!
Avoid the dehydration risk
The best way to know the body's hydration level is the color of urine... Easy to be sure if you drink enough! Even some color scale exist there are not as precise as mesuring the urine volume. This is often used as an indicator of hydration status. "If healthy individuals have urine outputs of approximately 100 mL/ hour, they are probably well hydrated (Freund et al., 1995; Lee, 1964). If urine output falls to less than 30 mL/hour for extended periods with an average diet, the person is probably dehydrated"
The water needs depends on 2 main parameters : the heat felt by the body and the physical activity level. The activity level can be optimised : reduce the weight of the luggage or using the elements to improve the way of moving (sun in the kazaktrike project and wind in the hiking kite project). The heat feeling can be optimised by wearing appropriate clothes and doing the most exhausting physical activities during the coldest time of the day. The body does no have a big water storage capacity. It's more convenient to drink water small quantities more often than the opposite. During an expedition it's important to have water available at anytime (Camelbag bladder or drinking bottle easy available)

">32°C and Field Assault --> Ratio 10min Work 50min Rest and Water Intake 1Qt/H (about 1,14L/H)!"
One very important question on multi-days hike is the weight of the backpack. Most of the hikes in the world have some water wells or rivers, creeks, lakes to get some water. The challenge in arid area is to carry all the water needed for the whole journey between two wells. During the Kazaktrike project in the Asian Steppes, I had always 3 days of water just in case I can't find water on my way.
But how many litre do I need to have enough in that case?
To answer this question, the US army design a chart to know the water quantity needed for each soldier regarding the WBGT index (70% wet-bulb temperature 20% globe thermometer temperature 10% dry-bulb temperature). So the WBGT index change if you are located in the sun or if you can get some shade, if the air is humid or dry (it change in the morning and the afternoon), if there is some wind or not. So in one day, it can change from cool to very warm. It's expensive to get a globe thermometer and most of the weather station in the world doesn't have any. To estimate the WBGT index whithout knowing the globe thermometer temperature, we can use an approximation to estimate WBGT with only the relative humidity and the dry bulb temperature (American College of Sports Medicine, 1984). But this formula may lead to incorrect estimates of thermal stress, particularly in cloudy and windy conditions.
There is some scientists (Moran et al., 1995, Shapiro et al., 1995) who developed another model to predict daily water and sodium requirements. This requirement varies with the daily average dry-bulb temperature and many other parameters. The result is shown bellow if the other parameters are set as following : very active person 3600 kcal/day - 70kg weight - walking velocity = 5 km/h - relative humidity = 50% - partly cloudy day.
